Born in Bristol, Southwest England in 1985, I moved to New York in 2009, at the age of 24, after getting a degree in English and studying film, and discovering along the way a love for photography – portraiture, in particular.
I’m interested in portraiture as both constructed and revealing, and so in pictures which acknowledge both the prepared environment of a sitting and the unexpected moments of rapport or distraction that happen during it. I work to strike a balance between having a plan and being open and receptive to moments of earnest human connection. Documentary work I approach in a similar way, looking for shapes and dynamics as well as emotion.
Almost as important to me as the time spent chasing around after people with a story to tell are the quieter moments on the fire escape in Brooklyn with a novel and a beer and a Miles Davis record.
